Coyotes

Coyote encounters

On the rise

  • Coyote sightings and attacks on pets in Santa Ana have been on the rise in recent months. Coyotes are drawn to cities for easy sources of food, including trash cans and outdoor pet food, which draws smaller rodents that coyotes feed on.

Aggressive behavior

  • An Animal Services unit can check for coyotes in your area as well.  If you are in immediate danger, call 911. You can report aggressive coyote behaviors by calling (714) 245-8792. Please leave a detailed message with your contact information and a description of the situation. We will return your call as soon as possible.
  • If someone is hurt or bitten by a coyote, a California Fish and Wildlife unit will be dispatched. California Fish and Wildlife will trap, euthanize, and test the animal. They can be reached at (858) 467-4201. For more information, you can go to the California Fish and Wildlife website.
