Public Realm Plans

Project Background

The General Plan adopted on April 19, 2022, includes significant changes to the City's Land Use Map. These changes will accommodate future growth along five major transit corridors called Focus Areas. A Public Realm Plan will be developed for each of the Focus Areas with the goal of enhancing the pedestrian and cyclist experience, providing amenities, increasing safety, creating a sense of place, and improving the overall aesthetics of these five major corridors in the city.

What is the Public Realm?

The public realm consists of all of the public spaces and places where we have shared encounters each day. Sidewalks, streets, parks, and plazas are the areas where we can come together, socialize, intermingle and experience the city. The physical surroundings that define our public realm contribute to creating a sense of place and a quality of life that is unique to Santa Ana.

About the Focus Areas

The Focus Areas are geographically distributed throughout the city, and each allows Santa Ana to meet its diverse needs in different ways. Follow the links below to see the purpose and intent, specific objectives, and custom land uses for each focus area that were defined to facilitate new types of urban development, reimagine these areas, realize the community’s vision, and further embody Santa Ana’s core values.

  1. South Main Street Focus Area
  2. Grand Avenue / 17th Street Focus Area
  3. West Santa Ana Boulevard Focus Area
  4. 55 Freeway / Dyer Road Focus Area
  5. South Bristol Street Focus Area

Community Outreach

Because of the interrelation between updating the zoning for many of the properties within the Focus Areas and the creation of Public Realm Plans, community outreach for this effort is being conducted in concert with the Zoning Code Update. Round 1 of the community engagement process occurred in July 2024. Materials from the workshops and additional information can be found here.
