Santa Ana to celebrate Chicano Heritage Month with festival August 11, educational celebration August 29

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The City of Santa Ana is celebrating Chicano Heritage Month with music, art, culture and education at two amazing community events on Aug. 11 and Aug. 29.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, the third annual Chicano Heritage Festival will feature family-friendly activities, live entertainment, a car cruise and show, food, exhibitors, and more! The Chicano Heritage Festival will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. at Centennial Park, 3000 W. Edinger Ave., Santa Ana.

“I invite everyone to come out to the Chicano Heritage Festival to enjoy music, art, and family-friendly fun,” Mayor Valerie Amezcua said. “As mayor, I know how important it is to see our culture and contributions recognized, and I’m happy we can share this with the entire community.”

The festival will showcase an exciting musical line-up with a headline performance by Lakeside and additional performances by Soto Band, The McCharmlys, Diamond Ortiz, Funk Freaks, Delfonics, and Kazzey and Sally Green.

Santa Ana’s Parks, Recreation & Community Services Agency is excited to announce a new Title Level Partnership with local non-profit Project Kinship. Applications are open for artist displays and car cruise/show participants. Applications are available at the Chicano Heritage Festival website.

Park gates will open at 12 p.m. for early arrivals. Canopies are welcome in designated areas throughout the park. Please note that alcohol is not permitted in the event space.

Educational Celebration of Culture at the Library

On Thursday, Aug. 29, Santa Ana Public Library will host an Educational Celebration of Culture from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Santa Ana City Hall courtyard at 20 Civic Center Plaza. The celebration will feature a unique Aztec dance performance by Ballet Folklorico Leyenda, with the participation of Mariachi Folklore directed by Oscar Garibay.

Other activities include a Chicano history panel; a presentation on the history of Chicano films; art and painting activities for adults and children; a small resource fair with local organizations; a picture exhibit by the Santa Ana History Room; and various giveaways, including cultural books and treats.

Chicano Heritage Month proclamation

Santa Ana was the first city in the country to declare August as Chicano Heritage Month. At their regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Santa Ana City Council will present a Chicano Heritage Month proclamation for 2024.
